Late Night Take Out
Quick and overdue catchup. The things that happen when you put your laptop to sleep only for it to never wake up ….. I tried safe starting it because every time I tried to start it I heard that dadada music intro, keyboard lights were on but no good.
Took it to the local Apple where they tried the same safe start, then they hooked it up to a PC screen, again a lot of nothing. It took longer than I thought but it was eventually mentioned that the machine is kind of, you know ……old. The wow being it lasted as long as it did.
Then came the next eventual suggestion about taking it to an Apple tech place but the thing is, the everything Apple wonder store that is NYC’s Tekserve is closing down soon. For old time’s sake and one last time I took it down there, maybe they had a magic trick or two but no, not happening, not worth the money for spare parts that went out of production way back in 2014. The nice young man suggested I try Mike’s, a new tech place a block away.
At Mike’s I met Tony. He plugged it into a PC (by this time I wasn’t bothering with too much of the breakdown history) and this time we had it up and running, my screenshot there just like old times. Back with friends! Talking about friends, Tony and I are now Instagram friends! He loves photography, he’s young and taking great shots already.
Now I’m not sure what to do next. I could go to Best Buy, buy a cheap monitor and hook the laptop up to that but that feels like resuc in an iron lung. Another laptop but wow here on the $$$ or maybe an iMac which has more bang for the buck but zero on the portability.
Meanwhile I’m here banging away on an unfamiliar iPad when I would happily do same on iPhone but dear old WP is a bit on the clunkier side of doing things there. Maybe it’s just me but I do so much on my phone – take shots, process there, post Instagram, FB, Tumblr, email etc etc. But WP? I want it to be so much better than it is particularly now as mobile is all I have and will have for the next few weeks while I’m travelling and deciding what to do next.
Whatever, love to hear any thoughts, suggestions, experiences you have had in this part of the woods and will do my best catching up with all your great posts. I know they’re out there!
Feel free to stop by Instagram and say hello if you’re there already, it’s an easy enough browse specially on mobile when it’s all I have at the moment.
I think this is more than enough for now, no idea what this post looks like so just going to go ahead, close my eyes, and press publish.
Summer wishes to everyone, catch up asap and big thank you to one and all!
Crikey, way back in 2014….not even 3 years ago….my machine is 2009, I think….
Hey Sue, i bought mine in early 2010 which i forgot to mention. The spare parts for this model expired in 2014 so I’ll have to back into the post with an NB on this point. Another point, i made sure I had plenty of spare room in the hard drive so as not to overload it etc etc. Yours still ok by the sounds of it.
Well, I have virtually all my images on external hard drives so as not to overload it. I do worry about how much longer the Mac will keep going….it is slow now it’s running Yosemite, and I won’t risk El Capitan ..
Same here with the XHDs Sue, I also have a fair stash of SD cards and have become more ruthless with my deleting. Hope your Mac keeps going!
So do I!
I had the same thought as Sue “way back in 2014” ? I say another MacBook Pro might be in order Patti 😊 BTW the image looks great.
Like i explained to Sue, the spare parts part stopped in 2014 for my early 2010 purchase. I’m not sure I want another laptop, well i wouldnt say no if Apple were to give me one, but I don’t want to be paying out just south of 2k every five years or so. Thanks Joe for kind words and emergency repairs to closing eyes when hitting publish. Ouch!
Great photo! And oh have you hit a sore spot for me about WP posts publishing on the iPhone!!! It just never works for me, so I’m not to trusting of the iPad either. My travel now consists of Instagram only, what a relief that is.
Now I’m getting nervous because my laptop is approaching senior moments rapidly.
Glad I’m not on my own with this WP mobile sore spot Angeline and great fun following you on your instagram travels. So much easier isn’t it! Safe travels and good luck with your laptop!
Good grief, Patti! If your 2014 model was playing up, the 2010 one I’m currently writing on should be dead! This proves absolutely that nothing is built to last anymore, not even the great Apple. I also feel your pain about WP on mobile. On the few occasions I post on my blog now, I can’t do it on my phone ‘cos the app is such a clunky model. Maybe they’ll get it right one day. In the meantime, I love your photo, as I do with all your postings when I get a chance to look at them. I think I’ll be seeking you out on Instagram soon.
Hello Pie, always good to hear from you – we go way back! Like yours, my model is also 2010, it’s the spare parts that stopped in 2014. So long ago already. So pleased to know I’m not on my own with feelings of WP clunkiness … Will look out for you on Instagram!
It is all far too complicated. I only use my IPhone as a phone and camera. I bought a lap-top for $ 199.- and this works perfectly when travelling. I try and stay clear of all that Tec stuff. It is not healthy and puts me off my oats.
Hope this helps.
A great photo. Hope that isn’t a gun sticking out with that bloke near the counter!
You stay on track with your oats Gerard and good to know you have a system working for you. No guns here by the way!
I suspect the next crash will be terminal. Apple probably don’t or soon won’t the OS you are using. And with more photos and larger files speed will be an issue. Sad to say, new computer time, Patti. 🙂
Yes Lignum, new computer time but still undecided. Strangely I’m not in a rush, I’ll plod along here on the ipad and wait for the weather to cool down which might jolly me along a bit. As for more photos and larger speeds, know exactly what you mean even if i am now taking fewer photos and had plenty of room on my hard drive. Oh well.
Sad news, Patti – hope you get a replacement soon. They’re definitely not cheap!
Thank you Richard, I’ll get it sorted eventually i suppose. Hope all well with you!
What a bummer. And I feel the same way about blogging from an iPhone. That’s mostly the reason for my long absences from WP, while I manage to maintain some presence on social media. Fab shot incidentally. Hope your images are all backed up.
Thanks so much for your input here Madhu, i dont understand why WP is so much more complicated mobile wise. Another point, i cant remember the last time I gave out a business card – it’s more simple now to connect straight away to either instagram or fb. WP connection? Forget about it. Always great catching up with you and yes, so much easier on instagram.
Oh gosh..I feel you and I hope you get your documents back. I don’t use Apple products and yet, it’s not easy to wp blog from mobile-phone. Instagram and twitter are friendlier for sure. I think I follow you in instagram, I will check it out..Great image!
Lovely to hear from you, thank you Indah and so pleased to know I’m not on my own with mobile issues. Even Tumblr on mobile is a breeze what with being able to URL and source the image, and like instagram, it’s an easy enough scroll through the browser and the nifty search buttons, tags etc. Will look you up!
Good shot, Patti. And my lovely macbookpro is running quite slow, as well. The Apple teckies advised not upgrading to El Capitan because it is unlikely to improve the speed – in fact likely to slow it down more. I am so attached to my laptop – so many happy memories! I’ll just keep doing the backups and see how it goes. Hope you have a solution for yours soon. xx
Yet some advise to upgrade to make it run more smoothly but perhaps EC has its own problems. Those OS names are beginning to irritate me by the way, I finished up with Yosemite Sam.
Hope your latop gets over the slow stage and keeps you happy for longer!
Great shot, Patti, and your tech issue is a familiar story to us all. Sounds like a new Macbook Pro is in order…cha-ching is right, but very nice. I love my Mac desktop for editing but that surely isn’t portable. 🙂 good luck.
Seriously thinking about the Mac desktop Jane and great to hear your positive view. Understand about the portability but more tempted by getting 1TB storage in the iMac and plodding here portably wirh the phone & ipad. Thank you Jane for kind words!
The Retina Display and 27″ screen is beautiful for editing. I went big w 3T hoping that will hold me for a while. It’s fast as can be, too, for LR etc.
How tempting to go with the 3TB …….hmmmmm.
You can work from the ext HD but this is a good solution.
I have no ideas for you as I am in my own sort of hell right now myself. Both my laptop and desk top are very slow and often freeze up on me when working at processing photos. So now I’m trying to strip all the photos from both machines and store them on a portable hard drive. What fun that is. Hope you solve your problems soon. 🙂
Oooh Emilio, sorry to hear and hope you sort it soon – that’s a definite pain.
I wish you to have strong nerves with your tech issues, Patti. All my old PCs and screens went to trash, I’m working with a chromebook now, said good bye to windows…
Thank you so much Frizz for kind words – nerves ok so far, it’s hot here, I’ll eventually sort something out with a new whatever come September. Until then, tap away mobile when I can plus catch up on a backlog of book reading. Hope you are enjoying your summer!
oh Patti, it is the way of things these days, isn’t it?
Your comment about dropping 2K every 5 years is really the relevant point. I still use a PC/laptop and my current one is only 2 years old. It’s alreayd clunking along.
Sigh …
I’ll be sure to check your always fabulous images on Instagram!
Great to hear from you thank you Laurie and hope you get a few more years out of your laptop. I found some detailed instructions on youtube as to how to replace the logic board – fascinating to see what’s under the hood but not sure i want to go tinkering.
Enjoying your fab NC beach shots on ig, lucky you!
Wonderful.
Thank you so much Rabirius!
Hey Patti
thanks a lot for this great picture…its just that moment i remember my first visit in NYC…my first job as an advertising photographer overseas …and so, very nervous…landed in NYC in the night and than to the hotel…directly in front of the hotel just a scene like you saw…nothing to eat since 16 hours and very tired…it was great and i will never forget…
kind regards, Jürgen
Having just about the same scenario here Patti, really interesting to read comments, would be interested to hear what you decide! I find it such a tough decision, especially with so much money involved and the range of things I like to do with it all..not to mention camera equipment and musical instruments I always have my eye on..oh my, time to sell an organ..
Sorry to hear you’re in the same boat Cath, it’s definitely a pain. Are you closer to making a decision yet? As for me, I have taken a huge break from doing anything about it but it also helps that I’m here in Devon (!) where i cant do anything about it but just be here, like back in the old days albeit with an ipad.
Always lovely hearing from you, thanks Cath and hope summer is good for you!
nice mood 🙂
Thank you Joshi!
Hi Patti..I have a two year old iMac and love it! Money very well spent in my opinion.. Nice to see your blog after a while away from WP
Lovely to hear from you Peter, now my turn away from WP for a while. Hope all well with you and pleased to hear your thoughts on the iMac – have at last ordered one & now counting down the days for delivery. Look forward to catching up with you!
A personal experience? My PC fried a few years ago, I went all Apple, Mac, Iphone, Ipad. Bought the Photoshop licence for Mac, and I’m fine. Just love it. Now, on the PC, I was able to retrieve the Hard disk. There is an add-on frame (10 bucks) that allows you to use it as a separate Hard drive. You can retrieve your data and photos that way. Good luck Patty.
