Been away so long, or so it feels, and not quite sure where to pick up the thread . . . swapped some NY summer days for winter sunshine in Australia and now back on the west coast USA in the colourful hotch potch of beautiful downtown Los Angeles. Mike, featured above in the green baseball cap, with the greeting hands said it all - "Tell everyone, wherever this ends up, Mike says hello to you all from downtown LA!"
Patti – you have a gift for capturing the ordinary and making it extraordinary. I love your work!
I love all these photo’s, Patty…they show life as it is…Say hello to Mike if you see him again. 😉
These certainly give you a real sense of life on the streets of downtown LA. Thank you for sharing these.
Heh, heh!! Good to hear from you. Beautiful, powerful images!! Love the insight into LA.
Fine set, Patti!
You should have popped into Bowral, NSW. Did you enjoy Aussiland? Any pictures coming up from Down-under?
Fantastic. I lived in LA for years and these photos bring back the feeling of that strange area known as downtown. I may have even waved at Mike from the comfort of my car. Hope to see some of your Oz photos.
A wonderful group of descriptive images Patti. Love how you get people to engage with you……very natural.
Nice shots. I think the graffiti is marvellous!
Heavy load on the first guy, and then I saw the 17th shot.
The man in the 9th image reminds me of actor Danny Glover.
Excellent series in this photo essay. The ways in which NYC and LA appear to be so different yet the same is remarkable.
To Mike in the 14th pic, “Hi back at ya!”
Your cart pusher between the Rialto and the One Way is priceless! Great admiration for all your street photos!
Great shots Patti and welcome home 🙂 I hope the guy in the last photo isn’t the “Midnight Cowboy”, LOL.
Wonderful photos Patti. Always a pleasure to see your takes on street life, wherever that may be.
BUT !!! You entered the dragon’s domain and didn’t call. Oh Patti….
Thoroughly interesting set Patti with a great finale! Great photos!
You’ve certainly captured the essence of LA….a unique city with many stories to tell.
great pictures, as always. I like your point of view.
Good to see you back. Have fun in LA…looks like you already are.
There is a common thread among these pictures, each one of them is a visual story full of humanity and poetry.
Wonderful summer, Patti!
Hello, Mike! Great shots, Patti – nice to see another city from your perspective – you capture humanity so beautifully.
I really get a sense for life in downtown LA with this series.
i love the way you can capture the atmosphere of a city!
Reblogged this on OLIVE and commented:
nylon daze – patti kuche – one of my favorites!
love it
Powerful images. Some are incredibly frustrating to see, knowing that people have to live like this. Now that I live in a big city where you don’t see people living on the streets, because there are more options, it’s more frustrating to see it happening in a city like LA and a country like the US.
From top to bottom, fabulous shots, Patti! The set flows like a mini-film. Seamless.

(Of course, I also dig the fancy white dress in closing shot!)
wonderful series Patti !!
I sure do love your candids of people.
This is one of the great wonders of modern technology — giving people all over the world a glimpse into otherwise unknowable moments in the lives of others. Thank you, Patti. I hope you’ve been enjoying your travels.
Great shots, Patti. There seems to be an upsurge of interest in street photography lately. Or maybe I’m just more open to it lately.
Yet again, you’ve captured the feel, the heart of a place. This IS LA. And then there are the individual captures that stand out on their own, each filling in the details of the story. Fabulous, Patti!
Left Coast, Right Coast, urban is urban, and your turf!
These are fabulous journalism, and marvelous photos, each on its own.
love to see these life shots 🙂
Amazing set Patti!
Fantastic graffiti! I guess that most of the people in these shots, are some of the many that never made it in the movie industry over there…
Great shots! Each one is a story and all together are an even more interesting story. I really like the skater photo with the details, a boy looking at his phone (this is today’s world!), the face on his skateboard, the colours of his shoes and hat, the pizza box on the table, the lady…again: great photo, great story!

Wonderful images Patti that really draw us in to look more closely and a times candidly at the life passing us by. People are simply fascinating…..
These are a great set of documentary shots, showing the desperate side of life in LA. It’s quite shocking to see the homelessness and the very poor and needy.
Oh Patti, there’s just too much ere. Some of my favs – County Circles, Shopping Cart Graffiti, Brass Plaza, Palm Skyscape, Pushing It, Shelter from the Sun, they’re really good, Patti! Back atcha, Mike! And don’t you dare come up this way without telling me, Patti!
What an amazing portrayal of daily life in downtown LA Patti! The reflections in ‘Brass Plaza’ make it a stand out for me! I also love ‘Shelter from the sun’ and ‘Angeleno Blanco’. A big hello back to Mike 🙂
Welcome back! What an informative series…we all think we know LA from the countless images, but somehow the downtown is a forgotten or maybe unexpected vision. Thanks for an enlightening post.
I love the very ‘robust’ mural – so much strength in the artistry. Don looks a great guy and I love the shot ‘Hey There’. Such a sad view of the person in the wheelchair, so lonely 😦 – well done for showing the negatives too!
Powerful images, a real sense of life on the streets.
I think that Don is lovely too :). Impressive graffiti, Patti. I enjoyed this walk very much.
hi Patti,

my favorite photo in your gallery: “PUSHING IT!” – actually I’m in cold Berlin – remembering, there will never be snow in California…
