A snatch and grab of random shots taken on a recent night out, tripping along Houston Street to wait for the bus which never came. Mr Kuche doesn't like to hang around too long. He takes long strides so I have to be quick and do my best to keep up. Puff puff pant . . . But dinner earlier with visiting family was so much fun, the wine and the stories flowed and I guess I didn't want the evening to end in too much of a hurry but end it did in the back seat of a taxi cab with a blaze of blurry lights ahead. My thanks as ever to the strangers along the way happy enough to smile for me and to keep the night going just that little bit longer! Week-end wishes to all!
And to you, best weekend wishes and thanks for taking us along on a night out in NY, so evocative – as always!
My pleasure, thank you Vicki! Don’t the week-ends go by so quickly . . . . .
A city to walk in. I don’t know anywhere in Miami that has that character.
So what crazy things are Miami people getting up to in their own space and time?
I love trippin’ with you my dear! Margie
Any time, thank you Margie!
Patti, your color shots light up the night and make it live.
The nights here have a life of their own, thank you so much Tom!
I feel as if I was sitting next to you in that cab 😀 Excellent shots, Patti – atmosphere is great!
Now that would be fun! Perhaps one day you will get to NYC Paula! Those cabs are one of the best roller coaster rides going. The potholes in the roads help!
Wonderful!! Makes me want to fly on over.
Fly on over!
That man lying down. Perhaps home-less? He would have to be unique as well. That little feather in his hat. Further down a man with the colourful tights, again it appears he has plumage too. Both are celebrating something. It might just be their Menschlichkeit.
Let’s give them both the Menschlichkeit they are due!
Although hasty, you shot NYC at night better than I did when I had the chance. There is so much more that I should have captured and didn’t.
I think you are being too hard on yourself Allan. Mood has as much to do with it as anything and some times are easier than others to surrender to, fall into it and go with the flow. Plus, as much as any of us catch, there will always be more we didn’t. Wherever we are! Which is good in it’s own way because that’s what keeps us out there taking more photos, that always next time!
You certainly know how to capture the moment Patti. There’s a lot of character in your photos.
Thank you so much Lignum! The character comes out at night!
Fantastic shots, Patti! I especially love that first one.
A cigarette in one hand and fingers through the hair on the other never seems to date!
(NB. I am not a smoker and do not endorse such reckless endangerment to one’s health but I’ll never be able to put that fire out!)
Great set of images Patti !!!
Have a nice weekend too
🙂
Thank you kindly HG. It’s quiet time here now in NYC, probably just as well! All best to you!
Mowing and pruning here, today, and a car boot sale yesterday. I love your photos! And those tights! Fabulous!
Why don’t we dress up more??? A pair of colourful tights is just the boost a car sale needs. Have fun and hope it goes/went well!
A great weekend for you too, Patricia. And thanks for letting us enjoy your pictures.
Wonderful to have you here in the picture, thank you so much Geedebee!
interesting dude crossing Houston in tights – the corner across from Pulino’s is one of my favorite hangs never a dull moment there – we walk the same streets – fun set!!
See you down there one day soon Pat! I was there again last night where Banksy was doing his Reaper piece. I can die happy now!
Interesting piece – don’t really follow this guy but this installation is/was very good and in the space that once housed one of my favorite places in the Bowery – http://youtu.be/J-83l-tKDho – seems appropriate on some level also that it was placed here on the very streets walked by Lou Reed – may he rest in peace wherever he may be…. let me know when you are up for walk.. shooting the parade on Thursday :>) Maybe I’ll see you then amid the chaos and frivolity of it all: http://photos.halloween-nyc.com/Street-Scenes/PatMinNYC-Pat-Merino/19911205_RF9khV#!i=1567342156&k=tPB6Mm2
Thank you for that fantastic link Pat and yes, that is the exact spot! And now this has just come in from Gothamist
Poor Billy . . . I have seen the coffin down there but didn’t know about the connection. Buildings and businesses in NYC have a nasty habit of disappearing overnight don’t they?
Love your great Halloween shots! Definitely going down there Thursday night and, as you say, maybe see you in the mayhem otherwise a walk next week?
My pleasure & thanks!
How about one day the week of Nov 11th – will be in Chicago most of next week but if we can squeeze it in I’ll let you know may be back by the 7th?
Pat, I am free Fri 8th otherwise the following week is fine. Hope you have a good week in Chicago!
The 8th is good for me too – we had to push our visit up to the 12th .. hope you had good evening last night :>)
Will email contact info etc..
Fantastic, see you on the 8th!
And yes, Halloween was fun even if I didn’t get to see much of the official parade, too distracted by the onlookers. Am sure you managed to get some great shots!
The onlookers are often a better show :>) Sending you my contact info via email…
Nice photos, especially the first one with that curly lady.Love it!
Thank you Marius! Smokers now have to go outside for their breath of fresh air, it’s where the fun is!
You have captured the vibrancy of the city superbly.
The city does vibrancy so well doesn’t it! Easier to embrace it otherwise I think I might curl up and cry . . .!
Certainly capturing the “night fantastic” in NY.
Mulberry (Little Italy)…..Houston Streets……. who cares if the bus never arrives…….jump in a cab.
Thank you Burgess! Waiting for the bus is half the fun and, down on that corner of First and First, it becomes all the fun!
Where have you been? WHERE have I been? Okay enough finger pointing. Just point me at those fabulous moments in your fabulous fotos….. I have missed you.
Lanier, so good to see you here and popping over to your fabulous west coast salon asap! Have missed you as well!
So atmospheric! I’m in love with no.s 5, 12 and 19, but what a great mini-movie.
Wouldn’t you love to walk around this city with a GoPro?! Thank you so much Richard for your very kind words!
What beautiful images you have! What are you shooting on?
The New York nights are very generous, thank you so much Jasmine! The camera is a Canon T2i, a tough little nugget which puts up with a lot of rough treatment from me!
Well it sounds like one I should look into I am not gentle girl either!
Have fun with the shopping Jasmine! There is SO much out there to choose from!
Thank you!
And my thanks to you, for bringing it all back home…
Lyn, always a pleasure to walk in your NY footsteps with your wonderful stories adding to the richness of what went before and what still lingers! I have always meant to ask you, how many photos do you have of your earlier days here in the mean streets?
NOT ENOUGH! Been missing it lately…
I always love seeing your pics of NYC at night!
NYC puts on a great show at night, thank you Arianna! Hope all well with you where you are!
WONDERFUL photos – all of them. Just great!
Thank you so much and lovely to hear from you!
such great street scenes
Thank you so much Derrick! I keep hoping you will visit NYC one day soon!
You’re quite welcome!! You’d have to be a tour guide so I don’t get myself into trouble!
Just keep me posted!
Each and every one a story just waiting to be filled out/in.
One caption was inaccurate, though: when you’re there, there are no strangers!
Loved this post —
Judith, you are so kind! Perhaps I should amend it to “Strangers in Paradise!”
Your posts — the words and images — always make me wish I were there. This one was no exception. How’s the pizza at Pulino’s?
Charles, how often do you get back to visit? As for the pizza at Pulino’s, I have yet to go there . . . You know those places you can walk past all the time thinking I must try there one day? This is one of them for me. One day perhaps! Thank you Charles for your lovely words!
perfect night shots – my favorite: the “Oh my God”-sentence with perfect body language 🙂
It’s a popular greeting over here, thank you Frizz!
NY NY, a wonderful town indeed. I feel like I’m walking with you:)
So good to have you along, thank you so much Elena!
I’ll bet each one has a story worth hearing. Gosh … one thing about NYC there are a million stories.
Love this view of a night of many visions.
Very good as always, Patti ….
Issy xoxo

Looking fwd to the dancing pic and a good dose of original NYPD Blue, thank you so much Issy!
best night of the weekend!
Isn’t it just! Which in NYC is any night of the week!
That is really good photojournalism from the streets of NY. Very good, and interesting, Patti. Enjoyed!
Bente, please know how much your comment means to me, thank you so much!
Wonderful walk-by random city nightlife shots! Kudos, Patti!
Thank you Annie, it’s another world at night!
An enjoyable read Patti and I have to say I am still smiling regarding Mr Kuche! I hope he realises what great images you produce when you’re on the hoof so to speak. Hope you have managed to catch your breath and I look forward to the next post, with or without Mr Kuche.
That’s so kind of you to say, thank you James! It took some time, and much frustration along the way, to reach a point of happy compromise – when out on my own the time is mine but when out together well, it’s like playing supermarket sweep and I am the one who has to keep up. Having said that, I don’t take my camera out with me all the time when out with Mr Kuche but there was too much fun in the air on this night for me not to try and catch some of it. Life is full of compromise!
These just have atmosphere in every corner, and I’m amazed that they were hurried! I love to come along with you on your travels, in reality I would be a scared mouse to be there, but I travel with you and feel like I’ve been somewhere really exciting!
Oh Cath, what mouse in you? Honestly, there is a place for everyone in this crazy city where you can make of it what you want to. I so hope you get to visit one day! As for the fact that these shots were hurried, that’s me doing my best to be a good wife. Doesn’t always work!
Your photos are full of life and light! Always love seeing your energetic adventures
Ruth, you are so sweet, thank you – it’s not often I get to appear in the same sentence as the word “energetic”!
lively photos and nice mood 🙂
Thank you Joshi! Tiny apartment living has its upside in that the streets become the playground!
Fantastic job capturing the spirit of NY at night!
Thank you Mark, it’s good to get out. Now and then!
Your night shots make me want to pack my bags Patti. ‘Oh my God’ and My space are particular favourites. And that last colourful view from your taxi. Great set! 🙂
Madhu, have you packed your bags yet? I keep telling you how much you would love it over here!
(and thank you so much for your very kind words!)
I know i would, But it doesn’t seem to happen somehow. Despite having a sister living in New Hampshire! 🙂
Madhu, that’s only “up the road!”
I know what you mean though, time and choice are not always on our side . . .
But I’ll get there someday 🙂
I am sure your sister will be thrilled to see you over here. You can do NYC together! 🙂
Wouldn’t that be lovely? Soon….fingers crossed 🙂
More Peterbilt’s please 🙂 And love the Strangers in the Night!
Martin, NYC is full of handsome rigs. You would be beside yourself!
Love the shot with the taxis lined up! There’s something intriguing about that image…maybe because the whole image is out of focus. I love it. 🙂
Thank you so much Sarah! It was one of those nights of simply pointing the camera and shooting the breeze, plus I suspect I was slightly out of focus as well!
Haha, well however it happened, it looks awesome and intentional. 🙂
I suppose the intention was to have fun, let go and not get too hung up on the technicalities etc. Thank you again!
Nice photos!
