High Bound Muscle
Always, there is something in the air down at Union Square and never more so than when nimble
limbed bodies are throwing themselves around down there, up there.
This is the un-cropped view from my seat on the steps. I try, most of the time, to take shots
from a fixed point, to catch moments happening around me.
By virtue of simply passing through anywhere, we are all of us on the edge of a frame at some time
or other. Some of us are lucky enough to be able to hit the top of the frame!
A perfect moment and nobody seems to notice the man in the air except you.
I get to have the moment all to myself – at least as far as the framing in this shot is concerned! I wasn’t sure how this was going to turn out, if at all!
That. Is. Awesome.
Thinking about the possible landing(s) makes me a bit nervous for the guy…
but… AWESOME!

I’m with SIG – glad to know that he landed ok, but it just doesn’t look likely! I wonder what all the other people were looking at?
I have other shots around this but I chose to feature this one alone because I thought he was such a stand-out. He was one of three who were practicing their random moves while over to the left there were some break dancers performing more of a routine. They kept themselves much closer to the ground while the three in front of me really flew! Plus I was more than comfortable sitting where I was!

Isn’t this a wonderfully whacky shot – perfect to illustrate your point that there’s always something going on down there at Union Square, because of course, the man in the shot is not the focus of everyone’s attention – his time has passed, or yet to come. Great capture Patti.
It’s like a school playground down there sometimes, different groups doing their different things – with the NYPD on playground duty! There were people to the far right but they are out of this frame and I shall post some more shots around him and his two friends later. They were so wonderfully unassuming, and just sort of hanging around.
Looks like you had a number of other keen photographers to keep you company 😉 It’s as fascinmating looking at the crowd as at the acrobat. Where there two different acts going on or was he part of a troupe performing across that area of paving?
Martin, there were so many acts going on down there but yes, the others were photographing some break dancers who were good but I was getting the better action from the random leaps in front of me even if I had to wait longer!
You gave it your best shot and so did the somersaulting man. Amazingly, the crowd seems to look at another event. Perhaps the somersault was so spontaneous as it to be over before anyone, except you, noticed it!
It adds to the interest of the photo.
His somersault was indeed very spontaneous as were the high flying leaps from his friends. With everyone in NY living in apartments the public spaces become the playgrounds and meeting places where anything can, and indeed does, happen!

Defying gravity. I enjoyed the car parks in South Jersey, too. How many photos are enough? Good question. Seems I have not found that answer yet. I am trying to take fewer but make them better. Having to deal with a ton of mediocre images looking for a golden one is not my idea of an evening well spent. Like this one, just right. You anticipate when to shoot and nail it!
