Washed Up!
I lost internet service for what seemed like forever which meant, however gladly/sadly, I managed to get a whole lot of other jobs done. This means I am way behind here with posts - yours, not mine, and I look forward to catching up soon! Until then, in rushed raptures of once again enjoying the connection, I send you best wishes from the washed up sands of Rockaway Beach where in between the hazy dusty smog of sandy grey, there is blue sky out there.
Devastation. Ick.
Water always finds the path to flow . . .
no worries about catching up.
I love this series of images. Looks like a foreign country. #3 is my fave fave fave.
Amazing image. Gallery worthy.
Thank you so much Terry! I know the comparison is way off but it does have a feel of Soviet abandonment to it out there, for me at least . . .
You’ve been missed! T. (Yes, your images ARE amazing. Incredible. The bottom shot is my favorite. I love the footprints. I love the hat.)
You are so sweet, thank you Theodora and I always enjoy my visits to you in Paris!
very calm 🙂
Yes Joshi, strangely so!
You’ve captured the aftermath. It’s always peaceful but desolate. A few souls venture out and bring hope. Beautiful.
Thank you Tom! Those waves look so benevolent now . . .
Stunning series, Patti! They’re such a fine balancing act of composition and emotion. 1, 2, 6 and 7 are my personal favourites, but they’d all look good in a show.
Thank you Richard, I am really very touched by your kind words!
They are fabulous shots, spring greetings. 😉
Spring greetings to you Carlos from the cold chilly north!
Fabulous pictures!
Nicole, thank you so much!
I LOVE the third photo from the bottom…it grabs my heart for some reason.
A penny for his thoughts perhaps?
Ummmmm……perhaps
Welcome back Patti! You are on it! These images are transporting.
I think of your stunning seascapes Philippa and often wonder what your artist’s eye would make of these Atlantic waters.
Thanks for those thoughts! The images have spoken volumes about the power of the sea. People are such thin filaments of life compared with that, and our wooden concrete & steel constructions… well.
I believe I could smell the fresh air …
That fresh salty air is struggling against the gasoline and hum of the generators . . .
Perfect title for the photos! You capture the emotion of the title … nicely done Patti …
Thank you LFR! You ever have those days where you fit in to the environment so well? I was feeling just as washed up!
I have definitely! You really need to do some kind of ebook or something with these great photos! 🙂
Wow, thank you LFR for the thought! 🙂
🙂
I love these pictures Patti. They are stunning. Great work as always.
You are very kind, thank you Arindam!
It’s so good to have you back.
And lovely to see you TT, thank you!
There is something very strange with the calmness and the almost peaceful ambience in those photo when you know what devastation the whole area have been hit with. Very strong pictures that tell a strong story. My favourite is the second one from the top.
Rockaway is such a tiny spit of land and it is almost as though that big Atlantic Ocean wants it back. Having made its statement, the weather has settled to leave nothing but the calmness and peaceful ambience amidst the destructive mess. Will they re-build, replace what has been damaged and destroyed? I don’t know, but those waves . . .
Thank you so much for your very kind comments Otto. I know how extensively you have travelled, are you familiar with the Rockaways at all? It is a fascinating part of the city.
I have been a couple of times to Rockaway Beach during the year I was living in NYC. But I wouldn’t say I know it well.
But you have been there and come away with some reality of the area which I find so difficult to translate . . .
Good to have you back, Patti. The photo with the two people offset, looking at the sea – a strong story. Great work.
Thank you so much SF – we are all of us at the whimsical mercies of the elements, survival of which sometimes accentuates the beauty in the simple. But then, as I remind myself, I am not having to clear through the debris making order out of the chaos but something about the beach, the peace and calm, does offer some respite. Hope all well with you, is winter starting to make itself at home where you are yet?
The beach has always been a place of respite for me, and now so far from the ocean, it’s an open field of fresh untracked snow, or a grain field and the swirling wind. This winter is off to a strange start, warm and wet, and now very cold and no snow.
Oh those fresh untracked fields of snow, and the vast oceans of waves. I am here now in Colorado where winter has finally hit after a very slow, warm and wet start. The snow is falling and the bitter temps are setting in but 9 degs F now is the warmest it has been all day! But to enjoy the respite of wherever we are, along with the memories of where we were . . . .
Your images are as good or better as anything I’ve seen in print of Sandy. Nice work!
Oh Derrick, that is so sweet of you to say! One day soon I am hoping to get back out there and walk the entire shoreline. The wind, water and sand seem to tell a story all its own . . .
True statement! Now if only we could see you work your magic up in the mountains!
Magic in the mountains! I wish I could translate the magic of the bitter cold and snow mists shrouding the mountain peaks but it is there for sure!
oh hell…. when all else fails… point and shoot! 🙂
Lots of great white shots coming your way! 🙂
Excellent!! Can’t wait!
Incredibly haunting, Ms. K…
I’ve never been able to wrap my mind around how utterly devastating nature can be one moment… and then so unbelievably beautiful the next…
Absolutely SiG! The innocence of those lapping waves where not long before they were surging. And I keep having to remind myself that it was a Super Storm, downgraded from the expected Hurricane!
I don’t see devastation in here, I can see hope 🙂 Take care Patti!
Where would any of us be without hope? Thank you so much Paula, look fwd to catching up with you soon!
A natureza….
It’s Beautiful .
Pedro
Hello and thank you so much Pedro! Your photos are such wonderful links to the beauty of Europe!
Good to have you back, PK. Nice photos. I like #3 best, but they all capture a feeling.
Not exactly a palm tree paradise out there but it does have a gritty charm all it’s own. Next time you visit NYC let’s go out there, and to Coney Island!
hi Patti,

greetings from my Berlin white-out:
Keep warm where you are dear Frizz!
Great photography once again Patti, Thanks for sharing my friend 🙂
My pleasure, thank you Jake!
The details and colour in these sand misted shots are just wonderful Patti..I agree they would be great in an exhibition, I can imagine them blown up really big..
No.1 and 2 especially!
Thank you Cath! An exhibition, wow! Sort of don’t know where to start with this idea . . . .
Beautiful and moving. It’s amazing how the waters can be so calm and soothing when at just a few weeks ago, it was a vision of fear as nature reminds us of its power and how in a instant it can wipe anything under its path. I was watching the Philippines news today and a deadly typhoon hit Davao and Bataan. It wiped out villages and so far almost 400 dead. It happened just a several more days before Christmas. One lady put up a small tree inside her broken house just to give hope to her neighbors who lost everything.
A winter beach – lonely…
Stark and absolutely lovely! No.2 is my favourite, and the last one as well.
