Sandy, after dark . . .
Power outages have hit so I have to be quick! The FDR in my part of town is completely underwater. That's six lanes of expressway gone quiet for now but Sandy's strong, gusty winds are certainly packing more than a noisy punch. The rain has passed and moved to the west with the storm surge due to be over in the next few hours. River flooding in lower Manhattan has reached 13 feet . . . Some noisy, after dark shots. High ISO with added dollops of wind and rain!![]()

The worst part is after the storm passes. The storm surges. But, it dosn’t end there. If electricity is out,
there are the young people who come out to do bad things because they take advantage of these situations
to do that. It’s a shame as they know security is low.
Stay safe and calm ….
Blessings
Electricity going out in the neighbourhood as I speak. I managed to get out earlier (to take these shots) during a quiet patch but they never last long enough before the next big gust hits and what with flying debris etc. . . . people are still out side!
Thank you so much for your company Isadora, it’s now getting eerily quiet again . . .
Patti, this needs background music. Mark Geary, of course. You shoot like I wish I could. I’ve got to get over the reticence I have about shooting. Sandy has spared us. Lost power in flashes but everything is still on. The winds seem to have passed, the trees have stopped dancing. Again, you have an awesome eye. Stay safe and dry. A bracing beverage, candle light, a good book and some non-invasive FM music should tide you over until daylight.
Tom, so pleased to hear all is well with you! It will be interesting to see who starts on the bandwagon about Sandy being “overhyped” – it’s still whistling about and it isn’t whistling Dixie that’s for sure.
Hope you get your camera out soon, I would love to see your views!
Flooding in NYC is a strange site to be sure. Be safe. Oh, and cool shots. 🙂
Interesting to see what we wake up to in the morning . . . I think it is going to be a long night!
(and thank you!)
Well… at least the streets are getting flushed clean!! Stay safe!
Will do, thank you Derrick! I think it is going to take some cleaning up, still so noisy outside . . .
I bet!! Hope today went OK.
Thank you Derrick, it went OK, as far as I can remember . . . it seems a long time ago already!
Patti – hope you and the boys are ok. Hugs and kisses from down under. J
Jane, all fine here and thank you for such sweet thoughts! Love to you all xxx
These are beautiful photos of the storm and rain. Stay safe. 🙂
Thank you Imelda, now fighting the urge to stay in bed for the day! It was a long night!
Amazing shots Patti.
Hope the worst is over. Damage control and cleaning up is going to be a Herculean task from the look of it!
Madhu you are not wrong about the damage and cleaning up but for now it is so blissfully /eerily quiet . . .
Great shots. I know where they are! Amazing that the FDR is underwater. Hope the power is back on for you by now. xx
Gaynor, we haven’t lost power yet! I thought it was going to happen – the big glass apt tower block behind us has been in the dark since last night.
Water has receded from the FDR but still no car traffic but plenty of pedestrians – our very own and very local Low Line!
wow, the river has spread its banks and taken over the fdr. what a shot. you take care patti. x
Thanks Col and now the water has gone, cars will be back soon . . . xxx
Nice pictures. Hope normality returns soon.
Thank you! Normality, everything being relative, is slowly making its way back into the system! NYC Marathon is this Sunday then the Election, yay!
take care of you Patti – I hope, you still have electricity and food …
We didn’t lose power in our small and very old building but the modern glass tower block behind us was out for at least two days. I think their basement was flooded. Food in this part of town hasn’t been a problem, not really!
I am in Miami. I know the pain, believe me. The wind damage has been frightening but never has such a storm surge effected such flooding here. This is catastrophic New York City et al.
Carl, I believe you and do hope you don’t experience such pain again!
Great, but disturbing shots, Patti. Hope life returns to normal soon. Stay safe.
It’s so frightening to see waters rise up so quickly and move with such force. Which is what we all learn at school but reality rather reinforces certain facts!
Hope it all passes soon for you all Patti!
Hope so too, thank you Cath!
Patti, just went to send you an email. Be safe. Thinking of you. Margie
Thank you Margie, how are your son and daughter?? Hope all well with them where they are!
Thinking of you, Patti. I hope you made it safely through storm.
Our little old building weathered the storm so well!
So glad to hear you are safe. Stay well. Thank you for posting – I can’t imagine the scope of what’s going on in NYC but your photos help. Hugs from here, V
Vicki, the warmth of your comment has gone a long way! Thank you so much!
Keep safe, Patti… these shots are troublesome…. You are brave, girl!
Thank you Paula, you are very kind to use the word brave – others might suggest otherwise!
Devastating sights. keep warm (and dry). I hope the water is receding now. best wishes, Patti. Philippa
Thank you Philippa, ground water up here receded quickly but flooded basements, particularly downtown haven’t fared so well. As for Staten Island, parts of Queens and New Jersey, the cleanup there is going to take a long time . . .
Patti, I’m glad that you’re covering the experience of NYC in the wake of Sandy. I think that you’re one of the best two people to convey it.
Great images Patti – our very own reporter on the spot! I hope you and everyone you know are safe and well. Sorry to hear of the loss of life and the devastation.
We were fine, thank you Martin, but I will never forget the punch those winds packed around our little corner of the world, knowing they were far worse elsewhere . . .
These shots are truly awesome. They manage to be frightening and magnificent all at once.
But you were outside shooting them! Wild woman, you need to get back inside.
This was the beginning, not the end — so I hope you are okay and back in something resembling normalcy.
Prayers and wishes and hugs, Judith
I came back from this little jaunt with an incredibly strong salty taste in my mouth and a head of hair full of knots which is absolutely nothing to write home about but for the impact of ten minutes or so (it might have been longer or shorter, I don’t know!) when others have had to endure far worse, as in being homeless to begin with.
Thank you Judith for all your best wishes and I am so happy for you that your part of the world was able to ride it out for a well deserved change!
Awesome shots that captures the intense emotion of the moment. The flooding waters look really scary and the usually busy streets looks quiet in a spooky way. I hope and pray that you, your family and community are safe.
So glad you made it through ok. It’s mind-boggling seeing these kinds of photos.
