Waiting for Sandy . . .
What to say? At the moment it is eerily quiet, the view is disappearing and the East River is rising. The FDR, six lanes of expressway, is closed to traffic apart from NYPD patrols sending foot traffic to higher ground. So far it has yet to stop the joggers and the sight-see'ers. Schools are closed, the children are having a ball! Broadway is closed as are parks and Mayor Bloomberg is advising the good citizens of Gotham to stay hunkered in. I am listening to the radio, WNYC. I can't cope with the noise and panic of television broadcasts. It's enough with the winds and the sirens which pierce the peace and the quiet. It is now raining. These photos straight out of camera, with a fair degree of camera shake!![]()

Stay safe and best wishes everyone! Only another 36 hours to go . . . . . . . .
Wow. I’d read that the water was rising, but it’s strange seeing it from such a personal perspective. Thanks for sharing these, and I hope you stay safe and sound and dry!
Official word this minute has it bearing down and getting stronger . . . thank you Alison for best wishes!
Wow!
Still waiting for the worst . . .
So it’s not that bad then…..stay safe, don’t take risks. It’s getting plenty of coverage in the UK, with regular reports on Sky News.
High tide is yet to come with landfall expected later tonight and not looking good for Jersey Shore. Power outages have begun on Long Island. . . and still waiting for hurricane force winds expected 5pm
Stay safe, we care about you.
Thank you so much Anna, all fine here! (You’re so sweet!)
Awesome! Love the energy in the one with the girl and her dog! Isn’t that cop asking you to get back in? 🙂 Stay safe Patti.
People are still out and about, getting some fresh air while they can! That cop was warning people on the river path to move to higher ground. Getting darker as we speak!
Be safe, Patti.
Thank you John, all ok where you are I hope!?!?
Keep those updates coming. Better and more insightful than any news I could watch.
Take care
They are now talking rapid water rises, it seems to be gathering more momentum with every minute . . .
Beautiful pictures. I can feel the presence of Sandy. As I’m posting this, she’s moving the trees a bit more than they can take. They’ve still got green leaves and that doesn’t help. Especially liked the pic of the Litter Removal/Hospital for Special Surgery. It seems a harsh way to pick up litter. Can’t they just put barrels out and let people drop it in instead of extracting it? Stay safe. 3PM looks to be landfall in NJ and we’ll get the full force about seven or eight.
Tom, apparently it is moving faster than originally predicted. Stay safe where you are and hope the trees stay where they are. Will Sandy blow the election to smithereens?
As always I love your photos! Tweeting this now 🙂
You are very kind, thank you LFR! It’s the waiting . . .
I’m not king I’m HONEST 🙂
Good shots … I invite you to my spring. 😉
I am so happy Carlos that spring has finally arrived for you!
Good luck with Sandy. We just watched the update here on CNN: seems like N.Y is quiet at the moment, with everyone staying inside or being out of town.
People are still out walking, jogging and embracing the wind! For how much longer I don’t know . . .
Stay safe Patti!
Thank you Kirsty!
Stay safe Trish. Downunder still needs you. I’d rather hear about Sandy from a real prospective.
I have heard more than enough from Sandy, noisy creature! Thanks Margie!
Take care, Patti. Hope it’s not as bad as predicted.
Seems to be settling down now, thank you Richard. Sadly accounts of fatalities and damage are coming in now.
stay safe, fingers crossed here 🙂
Olive, that means so much, thank you!
Good luck New York, and to you, Patti. Keep taking great pics, but stay safe.
Hello Pie, I have missed you and your posts! All well with you I hope, and thank you!
Oh, I know how you feel. It can be overwhelming.
Be safe, stay calm and know that it will be over soon
and things will go back to normal. I will think of you and
New York in my prayers tonight.
Blessings ….
Isadora, thank you so much! I have been thinking of you down in Florida where far worse has happened in the past . . . I so hope everyone has found shelter for the night.
Excellent pictorial documentation, as always, PK. Take care. News reports here hysterical as usual, but it doesn’t look good. Many hugs. xx
Those news reports always remind me of demented hampsters, round and round they go! News one minute but for those left with damage and destruction, the Jersey shoreline is a mess . . .
the joggers won’t change their rituals and routes?
Just making the most of it while they can!
There is an air of expectancy to these images Patti. People out getting a last look before the world is turned upside down. I don’t blame you for using the radio – They showed a bit of the local TV news on the BBC over here in one of our news bulletins and it looked like the newsman was going to have an anuerism at any moment 😉 Of course, the BBC’s coverage was standard ‘Aunty’… They’ve got enough issues of their own with the Savile affair 😦
Let me guess – the NYPD officer was saying.. “Nothing to see here – go home” 😉 There’s a group on Flickr called ‘Back the Blue – (Law Enforcement Police)’ that I know would love that image added to the group.
The two boys in the red and green parkas, the hunched-over jogger — they tell the whole story.
