Downtown Detroit
Day 1 . . .
We were in Detroit this week-end and it was there I fell in love. With Detroit.
Who knew that in the first hour or so I was to meet R, he of the 313 tattoo?
“Come on Princess, bring your camera and I’ll show you where I live . . .”
He promised me that by the time he was finished with me I would have no battery left on the camera. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to take him up on his offer to give me a guided tour of Detroit by night but for now it was a tour of what had once been a goods depot and where he now lives with others.
Such was my introduction to Detroit, a city whose demise is widely known of but in my humble opinion very much exaggerated. But what do I know?
I do know that a week-end in Detroit is not enough.
More details later!
These shots are really interesting, Patti. The second half of your set shows a very positive view of Detroit. Most of the time, all the photos you see are of run down areas of the city. I love that one street scene shot (9th one down from the top) for some reason. I think that is where the pretty side of the city picks up, or maybe it is because the buildings are interesting, or it is a great perspective? Either way, nice shot: nice set of shots. 🙂
.
Marcy, I have so many photos of run down areas, more of which I hope to post soon, but I would hate to think they were representative of so much that is good about Detroit. So pleased you enjoyed the shots, thank you!
I really like the way you have sequenced the pictures. They go from run-down outskirts to slick shopping down town. The pictures tells a nice story. Great work. Hope you will have a good time in Detroit.
Thank you Otto, I had such a wonderful time in Detroit but sorting through the photos has not been easy. There are so many run-down areas that even in such a short space of time (a week-end) they become part of the accepted landscape but there is so much that is good about the place starting with the extra friendly Detroit proud people!
Great diversity
That’s Detroit!
Nice shots. Looking forward to seeing more photos and reading more about your trip & the sites you shot.
Careful what you wish for Anne, details coming soon! Thank you!
I’ve been to Michigan a few times… but not to Detroit. Stunning photographs! As everyone has said, you’ve done a wonderful job of selecting a very nice ‘range’ of subject matter…
seems like there’s a true balance there…
for never having been there the combination still feels very real…
🙂
Thank you SiG, hope you get to go there one day! I have lived in a few different places in my time where strangers drive into town and want to know how anyone could live in a
dumpplace like this but always it is the people who make anywhere what it is and photographs only tell some of the story . . .Downtown Miami is fairly empty after work hours but sports and entertainment structures are bringing people back in. My point is that it is ironic that you would think major crime there but really in surrounding areas from actual city.
Carl I don’t know what the latest crime statistics are for anywhere in Detroit but from my simple observation sports, entertainment and weddings seemed to be all the go when we were there! I have memories of being in downtown Miami and feeling very lonely as the sun came down . . .
You portrait the Downtown Detroit in reality for choosing those beautiful picture ,Great work Patti 🙂
Hope you get to visit there one day Jake, you would love it!
Amazing how different parts of towns are from each other. Great photos!
It was fascinating to explore and I can’t wait to go back. Thanks Lisa and great to see you here!
Wonderful photos, as always. It seems strange now to see a city center with no people on the street, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that no one walks in Detroit. 😉
I know what you mean but I think when I took those photos most of the people were either at the baseball – Detroit Tigers were playing Chicago White Sox at home, or they were in the near-by bars enjoying themselves. Personal research supports the latter claim . . .
An interesting selection of photos Patti! I am glad you enjoyed your visit. I am curious how you met 313 and ended up with a tour. Hmmm. Hope you’ll fill us in at some point. Did you go to the DIA? Eastern Market? I could go on and on wondering where you went and what you saw. Margie
Thank you so much Margie from fabulous Michigan! Yes, we did visit the excellent DIA and the Eastern Market although I didn’t explore much of it because the karaoke, along with the ribs and beer, at Bert’s was just too good to leave. As to how I met 313, I had planned on including a brief account here in this post but I pressed “Publish” when I meant to press “Preview” . . . which I took as a sign to let it go. I didn’t have the energy to fight it! Details to come, he was interesting!
Looking forward to the story behind the photos —
