Gotham City Sunshine
Last week I took myself out into the early morning New York sunshine as it crept over the quiet, dark corners of Gotham. The almost deserted streets in and around Wall Street slowly crept to life while later, in another part of town, the sun shone higher and brighter in the tree-lined streets.
Tomorrow is May 1st. On May 2nd Edvard Munch’s “Scream” comes up for sale by auction at Sotheby’s. Estimates are high. It is also expected that Sotheby’s will be the venue for continued union agitation and picketing from art handlers who have been locked out over health care negotiations.
Wishing you sunshine wherever you are!
In Oslo you can now buy the cafeteria at the old choclate factory which has 12 of Munchs paintings in it.
When Munch painted these motives the houses lacked both windows and doors, so the factory workers complained about this.
The artist was therefore recalled to the cafeteria to paint windows and doors on his motives.
– Munch’s requirements was that a driver at all times should be available for him outside the factory. One day, when the driver wasn’t there, Munch went to the manager of the factory and told him that he could paint the rest himself.
That’s why some of these paintings doesn’t have windows & doors on them.
There are some photos in this Norwegian newspaper:

Who knew factory workers could be pesky art critics! I love the modernism of the room and thank you so much for the link.
Gosh, I love NYC and am SO jealous every time I look at your photos. Also, can you loan me some money so I can purchase The Scream? 😉
Honestly Heather, that amount of money just doesn’t seem real to me but please know that I would if I could!
I hope you’ll have less rain than in England!
There seems to be no end to it over there . . .
We’ve had plenty this entire winter which has been great! Today and yesterday were cloudy with some rain. How I love NY! Margie
Margie, you are sunshine! Happy for you that winter has been so good for you all up there – I say now that I have been to Detroit and had such a wonderful time!
Warning – photos to follow. Eventually!
Beautiful photos, Ms. K!
I’m never very happy about getting out of bed but results like this would sure make me feel better about all of that!
🙂
SiG, your kind words mean so much, thank you! I wasn’t too happy about being awake so early either but something about the sunrise told me that if I couldn’t beat it I might as well join it!
The “special effects” flag is really something else!
Also love the mural with The Scream —
They both have a touch of sun stroke!
hi Patti,
I love the Espresso car!
Frizz, the coffee was good!
I always assumed Gotham city was an unreal place, just the home of the original (and best) crime fighter. Thanks for awakening me to my error.
