NYC subway buskers singing Bob Marley in a crowded carriage, express to the Bronx,
and they were GOOD!
Yes, gritty and grainy but that’s life down there.
No woman no cry . . .
. . . and don’t you just know, everything’s gonna be alright!

Excellent shots, Ms. K! I really like the high-contrast and grain in them… as you’ve said, it seems very appropriate for the location / atmosphere! I think the faint pops of color work very well in your last piece, too… really pulls my eye through… so nice!

I felt like a one-armed bandit taking these shots – standing up in such a crowded carriage with one hand hanging on to the rail, big camera in the other with the train rattling on at a cracking pace. I can’t emphasise how well they sang the song, a young girl sang harmony – she is leading them up the stairs in the third shot.

It may be because I’m not a New Yorker, but I love the musicians in the subway — even the ones that aren’t very good. There is just something about the ambience. Several years ago, while working in NY, I had to pass through Times Square each evening. I loved hearing the musicians that played in the area near the shuttle. No matter the music, there was just something soothing about walking through that cavernous place to catch the next train back to the hotel, hearing music. Always made me smile, even when it was music that I would not enjoy listening to elsewhere.
Anne, this is so good to hear and I understand completely how you feel about something that could be intensely irritating but rarely is. But then I remember how many times I have heard Ave Maria on the Chinese stick fiddle . . .
Well, I have to agree about Ave Marie (and Amazing Grace!) on the chinese stick fiddle. But, I just tend to tune those out, I guess. And the mariachi bands. And the dancers that seem like they’re going to kick someone in the head as they dance on the A train on that long stretch from 125 to 59th. They fascinated me the first few times, then I learned to not sit near the doors if possible. Not sure how they maintain their balance, but I wish they’d do it somewhere else!
This all makes me a little nostalgic for NYC. Was there every other month last year, but haven’t been since late October and no plans to go anytime soon. 😦
Perhaps plans might surprise you sooner rather than later!
Anne, I forgot all about Amazing Grace – that’s how well I have blocked that one out! As for those dancers on the train, I still get a headache when I think about the last time I saw one of them do a somer-sault down the aisle. He hit his forehead on an overhead sign and it certainly wasn’t a gentle thump either . . .
His songs reminds us to chill for awhile when problems strikes. To think, to find solutions, to chill and relax, that tomorrow will be all right if we chose it to be. Yes, it will be alright after all. Beautiful my friend…
